about

Recently I’ve been very inspired by songwriters such as Alex Turner and Phoebe Bridgers. I love the way their lyrics find beauty in the banal. I think our everyday world holds a lot of unwritten inspiration, but I often forget to really look around and find the poetry in things. This song follows a walk I made from my flat to my therapist’s house. I was walking through the cemetery and I started singing happy birthday on a voice note to my cousin. I realised that it would be a weird and wonderful way to start the lyrics to a song. Then I went past the crematorium and they were playing ‘Angel’ by Sarah Mclachan, but it was empty, with the doors open. The loneliness of unattended funerals is very painful to see, but it also felt quite moving. Then I began to connect all these recent images from my life and thread them together. I’ve also been fascinated by the way our past almost feels dream-like because most days are not memorable, so we think of pieces, similar to a dream and I wanted to suggest this cyclical and overlapping quality in the song. It was written with Patrick James Pearson who came up with an unusual tuning on the guitar and the chords, which felt as if they matched the other-worldly quality of the music.

lyrics

Walking through the cemetery I sang happy birthday
that means everything to me
in an empty church I hear them play
in the arms of the angels it’s strange
like dreams
so strange

Just take my hand, don’t unhand me and tell me it’s alright
picture the pinhole of light that returns in the night sky
so strange

I learnt the lines that they said at your wake it was
‘in love we are made, in love we disappear’
no one should go unnamed, feed the birds
speak to the strays
in dreams
so strange

Just take my hand, don’t unhand me and tell me it’s alright
picture the pinhole of light that returns in the night sky
Just take my hand, don’t unhand me and tell me it’s alright
so strange
collecting each image that falls into view
it’s so strange
these souvenirs that become part of you
it’s so strange
it’s so strange

Just take my hand, don’t unhand me and tell me it’s alright
picture the pinhole of light that returns in the sky
