about

‘Still’ is a song about my grandfather’s dementia. One day when I was coming back from visiting him, I thought how strange and sad it was that my journey home is still the same, but everything has changed. It’s about a yearning for what was, but also recognising that there are moments when he is still the same person I knew my whole life. I took this idea to Avi Barath and Calum Duncan and we wrote the song together, the ‘still you’ in the chorus is meant to sound like a choir, singing with emphasis and defiance, that the person I love can, and does still, appear in those rare, bittersweet moments.

lyrics

Can we go back to what we knew?
Still drive the same way home after seeing you
can we go back to what we had?
Dancing in your living room
the years fall too soon

Cause I tried to find our history in your eyes
and I tried to keep all your unlived dreams alive
now I hear you’ve gone back to your mother tongue
the only place you belong

Still you
feel you running through my blood
still you
though your mind is playing dark
still you
still see a king in the mirror and
still you
I know that you are

Still you
feel you running through my blood
still you
though your mind is playing dark
still you
still see a king in the mirror and
still you
I know that you are

I can’t pretend that nothing’s changed
still put your records bring you back to better days
for a moment you appear
something beautiful in feeling you so near

Cause I tried to find our history in your eyes
and I tried to keep all your unlived dreams alive
now I hear you’ve gone back to your mother tongue
the only place you belong

Still you
feel you running through my blood
still you
though your mind is playing dark
still you
still see a king in the mirror and
still you
I know that you are

Still you
feel you running through my blood
still you
though your mind is playing dark
still you
still see a king in the mirror and
still you
I know that you are
