‘tell me, once you thought you’d live as long as the stars’

I wrote ‘Sorry’ for my grandfather after he was diagnosed with Dementia. I felt quite helpless when he started losing his memory and becoming disoriented. I had a strong desire to recite all the stories he had shared with me throughout my childhood, in an attempt to return them to him. On his more lucid days, he would reflect on his loss of identity, once he said to me, ‘I used to look in the mirror and call myself a king’. These moments were very moving and painful, they felt important to capture. I took the demo to Avi Barath who suggested that we create a string arrangement and leave the piece quite sparse.
