about

I wrote ‘Mother’ as an apology to mother earth. Although I know there are changes we can make as individuals, it is so disheartening to see larger corporations not taking climate change seriously. The planet has offered us so much, and I haven’t yet found a way to live that doesn’t negatively affect it. The outro chorus is inspired by the lines of Bertolt Brecht, ‘In the dark times/Will there be singing?/There will be singing/Of the dark times’.

lyrics

Is there nothing I can do to save you now?
Feel helpless as I was in that first breath
Is there nothing I can do, no power in my voice
feel helpless as two newborn lungs

Mother I’m sorry, I’m a part of your blue
and when you gave your love was there a hollow space in you?
Mother I’m sorry, I’m a part of your wreckage
and when you gave your love could I learn to protect it?
When you gave your love I never learnt to protect it

Can you be reborn when you’re falling apart?
Twist this hurting into gold, I’ll be there at the start
I know my song won’t soothe your ways
won’t be baptised, cleansed of heavy, lonesome days

Mother I’m sorry, I’m a part of your blue
and when you gave your love was there a hollow space in you?
Mother I’m sorry, I’ma part of your wreckage
and when you gave your love could I learn to protect it?
When you gave your love I never learnt to protect it

Will we swim? Will there be singing
when the waters come
when the waters come
Will we swim? Will there be singing
when the waters come
when the waters come
when the waters come
when the waters come
when the waters come
when the waters come
